Five years ago, a company called UberCab made a splash in San Francisco by letting you hail a car with your smartphone. Since then, the company, now known as Uber, has spread like wildfire through the globe. Uber currently operates in 58 countries and is valued at over $60 billion.
But the road hasn’t been easy.
While its valuation has continued to climb and it has attracted more and more investors, Uber has also fought rivals and regulators as it has transformed from a black-car service into a sprawling logistics company gunning for a future of self-driving cars. It has confronted threats from the taxi industry and even its own drivers.
It has also waged war against Didi Chuxing, its rival in gaining ride-hailing dominance in China. After a prolonged and exorbitantly costly battle, however, Uber China is now surrendering to Didi in a $35 billion megamerger.
As Uber’s biggest battle yet comes to a close, we look back at how the company got to where it is today. See the insane and successful journey of Uber and its CEO, Travis Kalanick, as it has moved from an idea to a worldwide phenomenon.

Uber was founded in 2009 and since then this online taxi-hailing service provider has expanded globally more than any other company in the history. Currently it is functional in more than 60 countries and around 300 cities. Currently having the value of more than $500 billion, Uber Technologies Inc, makes use of a GPS-enabled free application for connecting drivers from private companies of cars to passengers at affordable rates and provides a fast response time which is usually within 10 minutes.
While online taxi services have become a highly popular mode of transport in many countries of the world, the services were launched in Pakistan very recently. The Dubai based ‘Careem’ was launched in October last year. Since then, two new players have emerged in the Pakistani market: a Turkish company Albayrak (A-Taxi) and the US-based Uber.
All three of the services can be ordered through a mobile app though A-Taxi’s app is yet to go live. Unlike Uber, Careem and A-Taxi give an additional option of ordering the car through their 24/7 call center which also provides customer support. Uber taxis also provide in-app help service with email communication. A-Taxi has an added feature of stopping the car on the road.
Once a ride is secured, Uber and Careem provide details of the driver (name and picture) and the car (model, number and color) enabling the customer to track the entire trip on global positioning system (GPS) through their mobile app. A-Taxis also have GPS systems installed in their cars.
Exactly like we told you earlier, the largest taxi dispatch companies in the world Uber has officially launched its services in Lahore, Pakistan. Launch plans were officially disclosed to media during a pre-launch briefing held today at Barcelos, Lahore.
Loic Amado, Uber’s International Launcher for Middle East & Pakistan, and Amna, Uber’s head in Pakistan, revealed the details.
According to Loic, Uber has been downloaded by thousands of Pakistanis already.
He said that cities choose us, instead of Uber choosing cities. “The interest has been incredible in Lahore, so we are extremely excited to be launching here first. Anyone can now enjoy an affordable, reliable and safe ride at the push of a button thanks to uberGO”, said Loic during his briefing at the event.
Uber will be launched in Karachi and Islamabad during next few months.
Uber said that its launching the service in Pakistan with a cash as well as the usual electronic payment option – one of the first Uber cities globally to do so.
To celebrate, trips throughout Lahore will be free for the first weekend.
The first person to try uberGO in Lahore was actress and international model Mehreen Syed. Legendary cricketer Shoaib Akhtar also took a test ride around the city.
While responding to media queries regarding the security concerns, Amna explained that Uber drivers go through the following steps:
- People who want to be Uber drivers signup online
- Drivers are asked to submit there identification information, which is verified by Uber
- Once everything is checked out, potential drivers are asked to provide with a character certificate, signed by police station and other authorities
- Lastly, every driver goes through three different training programs — including sexual harassment seminar — to properly get to know about treating customers in a professional manner
Furthermore, Loic explained some of the interesting Uber features like ability to share your location with friends in real-time. He also mentioned Uber Pool service that allows 2 or more people to share a single ride and split the fare.
Online Taxi-Hailing Services in Pakistan
The launch of this online taxi-hailing service in Pakistan arrives after several other online taxi-hailing projects. These include Easy Taxi application of Rocket Internet, a German ecommerce investor. This service was not successful in penetrating into the market. However, Uber has high hopes of attracting business through their brand.
Ubers Expected Usage in Pakistan
Despite several failures of other online taxi-hailing services in Pakistan, the career page of Uber’s website advertised for the post of three top managers this week in the eastern part of Lahore. The launch of 3G and 4G networks in Pakistan gives hope to this company to galvanize its business in this region. Around 14% of the population of Pakistan numbering 190 million has internet access while 73% can access it through their cell phones according to the telecommunication authority of the country.
The head of communication of Uber in Africa and Middle East, Shadeen Abdellatif, stated that they are all set to launch the service in Pakistan by the end of this year or maximum by the beginning of next year. Referring to the city of Lahore which is the second largest city where Uber will be launched initially, she further stated that in the next coming months they will put together a strong team in Lahore to prepare for the mega launch.
