The history of mankind has witnessed many leaders over the ages. Many of these leaders achieved leadership through might or inheritance and some were chosen as leaders because of certain outstanding qualities that they possessed. Among the latter group there have also emerged some leaders whose works and contribution to humanity cannot be limited to any particular time or place; and their life-styles, their works and the sayings of such heroes continue to inspire and motivate people, generation after generation. Amir al-Muminin, Ali ibn Abu Talib a.s is a unique leader who stands out among all other leaders. Besides Shi"as who believe in his Imamate and Vilayat, many non-Muslims have praised his personality and unique qualities and made attempts to highlight certain aspects of the personality of this everlasting leader of ages and have written hundreds of books and research papers about him.

Holy family

Most sacred family on earth
Most sacred family on earth
Imam Ali (A.S.) was born in the Holy Kaaba at Mecca on Friday, the 13th day of Rajab, 600 A.D. Both the Holy Prophet saww and Hazrat Ali as belonged to the same clan. They were Hashimites, the clan of Bani Hashim. Muhammad's saww father was Hazrat Abdullah as, and that of Hazrat Ali as, Hazrat Abu Talib as. They were brothers and their father was Abdul Muttalib as. Thus the Holy Prophet saww and Hazrat Ali as were cousins.

Brothers

Ali was the youngest child in the family. Of the three of his brothers, Talib and Aqeel, were many years older than him; Jaafer was ten years older.

Mother

Hazrat Ali's mother Fatima sa was the daughter of Asad, a famous magnate of the Quraish clan. She was also the aunt of the Holy Prophet, being the wife of Hazrat Abu Talib as, the Prophet's saww paternal uncle. When she was pregnant, she promised Muhammad saww to make over to him whatever child was born to her, be it male or female. Muhammad, aware of the issue that would be brought forth, gladly accepted the offer.  [1] holy family

Wonderful menifestation

Ali as honoured Kaa'ba
Ali as honoured Kaa'ba
Ali's as holy personality began its wonderful manifestation even during the period of his mother's pregnancy. At that time, Muhammad saww had not yet announced his prophethood, and yet when he saww passed before Fatima sa, who being his aunt was senior to him saww, she used to stand up in reverence and respect for him saww, and somehow something within her never allowed her to turn her face away from Muhammad saww as long as he saww was around. When people asked her about this peculiar behaviour of hers, she would say that she could not help it, that some irresistible urge from within made her do so. This statement was disbelieved by those who wished to test her. So one day they made her sit and they asked two strong women to hold her down when Muhammad saww passed by. Then they asked Muhammad saww if he would walk in front of her, to which he saww gladly agreed. As he saww came in front of her, Fatima sa began to rise and she stood erect throwing both women aside. Muhammad saww who alone was aware of this mystery, used to smile. He saww was keenly awaiting the birth of his cousin Ali as. During her pregnancy whenever Fatima sa was alone, she heard from within her a mysterious whisper which was to the glorification of God.  [2] wonderful

Birth of Imam Ali as and crack in Kaaba

Birthplace of Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb (as)Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb's (as) birth in the Holy Kaaba is unique, for this is the only known occasion on which a child was born within the precincts of the Holy place ever since its foundation thousands of years ago.Fatima bint Asad sa, the expectant mother of Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb (as) on Friday was praying outside the Holy Kaaba when she suddenly felt the labor pains and prayed to Allah (SWT) saying

O Allah I believe in You and in the messengers and the scriptures You have sent. I believe in what has been said by my grandfather Prophet Abraham Ibrahim who built the ancient house Holy Kaaba. So for the sake of the builder of this House and for the sake of the child in my womb I implore You to make my labor easy.

Wall of Kaa'ba splited into a door
Wall of Kaa'ba splited into a door
Shortly after that she gave birth to her baby. And it was to this sacred place, the Holy Kaaba, that Providence led Fatima bint Asad sa, the mother of Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb (as). She felt weighed down by intense pain when Imam Ali as was due to be born. She knelt to pray, and when she raised her head from her Prostration, the wall of the Holy Kaaba split as if by a miracle, to admit her within, and the portion of the wall returned to its normal position. The Holy Kaaba was sealed with Fatima bint Asad sa inside. Had it not been the Will of God, such a thing could never have happened. This crack is still there to this day on the wall of the Holy Kaaba. [3] Kaaba

Witnesses

Some people, including Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, Holy Prophet Muhammad's (saw) uncle witnessed this miracle, who had been near the Holy Kaaba and started telling other people. The news spread like wildfire all over Makkah. The keys of the Holy Kaaba were brought to unlock the door, but all efforts ended in failure.

Ali was born inside the Kaaba in Makkah. The great historian, Masoodi, the Herodotus of the Arabs, writes on page 76 of Volume II of his book, Murooj-udh-Dhahab (The Golden Meadows), that one of the greatest distinctions that Ali enjoyed was that he was born in the House of Allah. Some of the other authorities who have affirmed Ali's birth in the Kaaba, are:

Holy arrival

Split of wall
Split of wall
On the fourth day of this happening, with awe, the wonder-struck crowds surrounding the Holy Kaaba witnessed the lock of the door falling of its own accord, and to their surprise, Fatima bint Asad sa emerged radiant from the sacred premises, cheerfully holding her newborn babe with his eyes close in her arms. Yet another surprise awaited them that Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) was waiting to receive her and her newly born child, because Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) had been away when all this happened. When Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) came back from his trip, went to the Holy Kaaba and the first face the little Imam Ali (as) saw in this world was the smiling face of the Holy Prophet of Islam whom he greeted thus:  "Assalamo alaika ya Rasoolallah" (Peace be upon thee O Prophet of Allah). Thus it is an undisputed fact that Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb (as) was born a Muslim.

Immense love of Holy prophet saww for Imam Ali as

Imam Ali as's  first words testified to the Prophethood of Muhammad (saw). Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) lovingly took him into his arms. Imam Ali's first bath after his birth was given by Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), with a prediction that this child would give him his last bath. This prophecy was fulfilled on the death of Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw). Then Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) recited the Adhan and Eqamah in the ears of the baby. Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb (as) accepted no other food than the moisture of Holy Prophet Muhammad's (saw) tongue, which he sucked for several days after his birth. Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) fondled him in his lap in his infancy, and chewed his food and fed Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb (as) on it. Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) often made Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb (as) sleep by his side, and Imam Ali (as) enjoyed the warmth of Holy Prophet Muhammad's (saw) body and inhaled the holy fragrance of his breath. [4] arrival

Khana Kaaba
Khana Kaaba
Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb (as) has been described as having been found like a priceless pearl in the shell of the Holy Kaaba, or a sword in the sheath of Allah's House, or as a lamp found in Allah's Abode shedding Light all around. The sanctified birth of Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb (as), as that of Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) was foretold in the Scriptures, when God said to Abraham, who asked for a blessing on Ishmael; "And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold I have blessed him and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly, twelve princes shall be beget, and I will make him a great nation." (Genesis (bible)17:20) The felicitous Prophecy in Genesis 17:20 about the advent of a Prophet is said to point to the appearance of Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) and to Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb (as) as the first of the twelve princes who are none other than the Twelve Imams.

Genealogy of Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb as

Amongst the descendants of Prophet Abraham / Ibrahim (as), Imam Ali (as) belonged to the line of Quraish. Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb (as) the Commander of the Faithful (Amir al-Muminin) was the first cousin of Holy Prophet Muhammad Mustafa (saw). His father Abu Talib ibn Abdul Muttalib, and the father of Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), Abdullah ibn Abdul Muttalib, were brothers from the father Abdul Muttalib (who was called Shaybah) ibn Hashim.

Name of Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb as

At the time of the birth of Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb (as) his father Abu Talib ibn Abdul Muttalib and his cousin, Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), were out of Makkah, his mother Fatima bint Asad gave him the names of Asad and Haider; when his father Abu Talib ibn Abdul Muttalib returned he called him Zayd. But when Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) came back to the city he gave him the name of Ali, saying that it was the name decreed for him from Allah (SWT).

Ali as-an exceptional personality

An Arab poet composed the following distich on the birth of Ali:

He Ali is the one for whom the House of Allah was turned into a maternity home And he is the one who threw the idols out of that House Ali was the first and the last child ever to be born in the Kaaba.

  • It was a custom of the Arabs that when a child was born, he was placed at the feet of the tribal idol or idols, thus symbolically “dedicating” him to the pagan deity. All Arab children were “dedicated” to the idols except Ali ibn Abi Talib. When other Arab children were born, some idolater came to greet them and to take them in his arms. But when Ali was born, Muhammad, the future Messenger of God, came into the precincts of the Kaaba to greet him. He took the infant into his arms,, and dedicated him to the service of Allah.
  • Birth in Kaaba was one out of many distinctions that God bestowed upon Ali. Another distinction that he enjoyed was that he never adored the idols. This again makes him unique since all Arabs worshipped idols for years and years before they abjured idolatry and accepted Islam. For this reason that he is called (Wajhullah) “he whose face was honored by Allah.” His face was indeed honored by Allah as it was the only face that never bowed before any idol.

Maqam-e Mustajar

Maqam-e Mustajar
Maqam-e Mustajar
When the lovers of Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb (as) go for Hajj and Umra (pilgrimage), they always remember his birth in the Holy Kaaba and whilst making the Tawaf (the Ritual Circling of the Holy Kaaba), they feel proud and happy that Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb's (as) name is linked with the House of God, and at every circuit they look towards the wall which had split in two to allow Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb's (as) mother to enter the Sacred Premises. This particular place is known as 'MUSTAJAR', and here a special ritual is highly recommended. The entire body with the cheek and the stomach are to be brought into full contact with the wall and in this position; the worshipper with palms open should seek forgiveness and ask Allah (SWT) for his righteous desires and for the removal of difficulties. The following supplication should be recited: "Ya Allah! This House is your House and this person is your slave and this place (Mustajar) is that place from where forgiveness of sins and safety from the fire of Hell are obtained."

Adoption by Holy Prophet saw

Holy Prophet saw adopted Mola Ali a.s
Holy Prophet saw adopted Mola Ali a.s
The birth of Ali filled the heart of the future Apostle with boundless happiness. The child was someone “special” for him. After all, Muhammad had many other cousins and they had their own children, and Ali as himself had three elder brothers; but he didn't show any interest in any of them. Ali as and Ali as alone was the focus of his interest and love. When Ali as was five years old, Muhammad saw adopted him, and from that moment they were never to part with each other. It is true that Muhammad saw adopted Ali but not for the reason stated above. In the first place, Abu Talib as was not in such dire straits that he could not feed a child of five; he was a man of rank and substance, and his caravans plied between Hijaz and Syria or between Hijaz and Yemen. In the second place, feeding a child of five years would have hardly made any difference to a man who fed even strangers if they were hungry. Muhammad saw and Khadija as adopted Ali as after the death of their own sons. Ali as thus filled a void in their lives. But Muhammad saw, the future prophet, also had another reason for adopting Ali as. He picked out Ali as to bring him up, to educate him, and to groom him for the great destiny that awaited him in the times to come. Dr. Taha Hussain of Egypt says that the Messenger of God himself became Ali'sas guide, teacher and instructor, and this is one more distinction that he enjoys, and which no one else shares with him (Ali as). [5] adoption

The prophet’s (PBUH) migration to Medina is a turning point in the history of Islam . Ali (A.S.) had an outstanding role in the events that followed the prophet’s (PBUH) migration, a few of which are mentioned here under:

Alis A.S. Marriage with Fatima S.A.

After prophet’s(PBUH) migration, Imam Ali (A.S.) was given the responsibility of bringing Hazrat Fatima (S.A.), the beloved and devoted daughter of the Prophet (S.A.W.), to Medina. A few months later Ali (A.S.) married Fatima (S.A.). Ya`qubi, the Muslim historian writes: "A group of `Muhajers" (those who had migrated from Mecca to Medina) had proposed for Fatima’s (S.A.) hand in marriage. On hearing about her marriage with Ali (A.S.), some of them raised objections. In reply to their objections, the Prophet of Allah (PBUH) said: “I did not marry Fatima to Ali, rather it was Allah Who married her to Ali.” 9 Interestingly, the prophet’s (PBUH) lineage has been through Fatima (S.A.) and Ali (A.S.).

However, he chose Imam Ali (A.S.) as his brother and said to him: "You are my brother, successor and inheritor and I inherit from you." [6] relation Kunyah of Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb (as) Among various Kunyah (agnomen), the most famous were Abul Hasan, Abul Hasnayn and Abul Sibtain.
